England complete Test victory but Pakistan earn respect

what was that noise? Might pay to count your stumps Alistair.

Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott hit unbeaten half-centuries to guide England to a nine wicket win over Pakistan in the 2nd Test at Edgbaston.

Pakistan started the day hoping to add some valuable runs for the last wicket but their innings only lasted another 11 balls. Chasing only 118 to win the Test and take a 2-0 lead in the four match series England were never in danger despite the early loss of Alistair Cook.

Andrew Strauss was dropped shortly after and with that went Pakistans hopes. Their cause was not helped by clear skies and a hamstring injury to fast bowler Umar Gul.

Realistically it would have taken a miracle for Pakistan to win after being bundled out for 72 in the first innings. On the positive side though, Mohammad Amir has continued to impress and Saeed Ajmal will have earned himself another start. If Pakistan can tighten up their concentration in the field and the team backs up outstanding individual performers then there is every chance that they will win at least one of the next two Tests.

England will be increasingly looking to the Ashes and will probably drop their intensity now against Pakistan with the series safe. England look a million dollars when bowling in damp overcast conditions. Take that away and they can look very ordinary at times.

Match Result: England 251 and 118 for 1 (Strauss 53*, Trott 53*) beat Pakistan 72 and 296 (Haider 88, Ajmal 50, Swann 6-65) by nine wickets.
