Facebook hit list – 3 teens murdered in 10 days

Sad that a social networking site like facebook that brings people together has been used to spread fear

A hit list posted on Facebook is being investigated after three teenagers named in it were murdered in the past 10 days.

Residents of the Colombian town of Puerto Asis are living in fear following the August 17th posting of the 69-name hit list on Facebook.

The message with the list gave the people named three days to leave the town or be executed. The police were not too worried in a country renowned for violence and threats until they realised that two of the teens on the list had been gunned down while riding a motor cycle on August 15th. Since then one more has been murdered and another seriously injured.

An additional list of 31 names has since been published. Many parents of those named have sent their children out of town for safe keeping.

Federal officials say they are taking the threats seriously and have sent investigators, including internet experts from Bogota, to Puerto Asis. Authorities also are offering a reward of 5 million pesos (around $2,750) for information on the killings.

There are a number of criminal gangs and marxist guerillas operating in the area around Puerto Asis, but as yet police have no firm suspects or motive.
