New Zealand knocks over France at World Basketball Champs

Casey Franks is proving that age and being Canadian is no barrier to playing great basketball for New Zealand

The New Zealand Tall Blacks have knocked over France 82-70 in their final pool match of the FIBA World Basketball Championships in Turkey.

Thomas Abercrombie’s three pointer on the final buzzer put New Zealand into third place in Group D ahead of France on points differential.

The Tall Blacks will now go on to the final 16, where they will play Russia for a place in the Quarter-Finals. Without Thomas’s three points they would have been facing red hot hosts Turkey and almost certain elimination.

This is a tremendous result for New Zealand who started the tournament with successive losses to Spain and Lithuania.

The key to todays victory was a second quarter scoring blitz backed up by tight defence. The Tall Blacks piled on 22 points and only conceded 5, from which France never recovered.

Coach Nenad Vucinic can now rest a little easier knowing his job is secure and whatever happens his team has exceeded expectations.
