Silver Ferns win Netball Gold in double overtime drama

Gold medal for the Silver Ferns - Still enough energy in the tank for some serious hugging.

The New Zealand Silver Ferns have won the netball gold medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games with a 66-64 victory over the Australia Diamonds.

In what has to be one of the finest netball internationals ever played the match see-sawed for 82 gruelling minutes. Australia held the advantage 23-20 at half time but New Zealand fought back and built up a handy lead. At one stage in the final quarter they were six goals in front, but Australia would not give up. By the time the final hooter sounded the scores were tied 59-59.

Still tied after extra time the game went into double overtime where a two goal advantage was needed to win the match. After many tense minutes and some dodgy umpiring calls it was New Zealand who got to cry tears of joy. For Australia it was only desolation.

Australian shooter Catherine Cox was outstanding as was Sharelle McMahon. At the new Zealand shooting end, Irene van Dyk was well marked by Susan Fuhrman but Maria Tutaia stepped up and kept putting in shot after shot.

It is hard to single players out when it was such a total team effort from both teams, but Casey Williams was sensational, keeping the pressure on the Aussie shooting circle for the entire game.

Ruth Aitken – you don’t get a medal but you deserve one. Norma Plummer is a wonderful coach but you outdid her this time.
