Social Network tops box office in opening weekend

The Social Network - Like? Unlike?

The Social Network topped the US box office in its opening weekend. The Facebook ‘the origins’ film pulled in a respectable $22.4 million on approximately 3,800 screens at 2,771 locations.

Given that it is a biopic with an unusual subject this is a good result for Sony and Columbia. With only a modest $50 million production budget and that it has yet to be released internationally then there is a tidy profit in the offering.

The Social Network’s debut at No.1 was partly thanks to limited opposition. In second place in its second week was 3D animated feature The Guardians with $10.9 million this weekend and Wall Street: Money never sleeps at $10 million.

Two horror movies on debut about scary children, Case 39 and Let Me In, sank without trace.
