Cricket World Cup: England defeat Netherlands – just

Close but no cigar for Netherlands centurion, Ryan ten Doeschate.

England have opened their Cricket World Cup campaign with a close match against minnows the Netherlands at Nagpur.

In what nearly became the greatest night in Dutch cricket history, South African born all rounder Ryan ten Doeschate scored 119 runs from 110 balls to propel the Netherlands to an imposing 292 for 6 wickets in their 50 overs. Australian born Tom Cooper was second top scorer with 47.

Englands top order gave them a good start with Andrew Strauss (88) and Jonathan Trott (62). All the top four batsmen scored over 30. But with the run rate still hovering at 7 runs per over with 10 overs to go, it was left to Paul Collingwood (30 n.o.) and Ravi Bopara (30 n.o.) to bring England home with eight balls to spare.

Ryan ten Doeschate also starred with the ball snaring two wickets for 47 runs in his 10 overs.

It was a stuttering start for England who were average in the field and wayward in their bowling. Thankfully for them, their batsmen did not suffer the same jitters.

England 296 for 4 (Strauss 88, Trott 62) beat Netherlands 292 for 6 (ten Doeschate 119*, Cooper 47) by six wickets
