Tutankhamun treasures looted from Cairo Museum

No it is not a Japanese Whaler, it is King Tutenkhamun harpooning something. Maybe the curse of King Tut will harpoon the looters?

The Egyptian Museum of Cairo has been looted of at least 17 priceless statues following a break-in during the civil unrest of recent weeks.

Zahi Hawass, Egypts Minister of Antiquities said that the missing objects include a gilded wood statue of King Tutankhamun being carried by a goddess; parts of a gilded wood statue of Tutankhamun harpooning; a limestone statue of Akhenaten; a statue of Nefertiti making offerings; a sandstone head of an Amarna princess; a stone statuette of a scribe from Amarna; 11 wooden shabti statuettes of Yuya; and a heart scarab of Yuya.

The discovery that the ancient treasures are missing came after museum staff took an inventory. There had been break-ins at the museum on the night of January 28th, not long after protests against President Hosni Mubarak began in Cairo.

Hawass said there was furhter trouble on January 31st when intruders vandalized statues and display cases as well as stealing jewelry from the museum gift shop.

A number of suspects were apprehended shortly after the break-in, some of them with antiquities in their possession, Hawass said.

The police and army plan to question people who are already in custody, Hawass said. Newswarped suspects that the suspects might have more done to them than just have some questions asked.

Egypt and most Egyptians are extremely protective of their national treasures. It does seem a little strange though that with the police and the army largely leaving the protesters alone for the last few weeks that there would have been ample numbers to protect key sites like the Egyptian Museum.

Meanwhile in other news the Egyptian army has taken an inventory of politicians after the recent unrest and have discovered that they are missing one President. Apparently the President has not been seen for days and the police and army have no idea where he has disappeared too or who may have taken him.

Newswarped is jumping up and down to be asked. Pick me! Pick me! Yes Newswarped? He will be in the United Arab Emirates. It is relatively stable and money will get you anything including anonimity.
