Earthquake in China – 24 dead, 1200 homes destroyed

Chinese Police rushing to help with the wounded. Awesome effort chaps.

An earthquake has hit Yunnan province in south-west China, destroying 1200 homes and killing at least 24 peole and injuring more than 200.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake was centred in Yingjiang and struck just before 1pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Police, firefighters and soldiers rushed to the area to pull out people trapped in the rubble of homes and apartment blocks. The quake hit while many people, including students, were home for a customary midday rest.

Vice President Xi Jinping, called for an “all-out” effort to get food, water and clothing to those affected by the quake, Xinhua News Agency said.

More than 127,000 people have been evacuated to nearby shelters, and the death toll is expected to rise as the search for survivors continues.

Newswarped is a little unimpressed with the Western media’s coverage of this disaster. This is a serious even that is not receiving much attention.

The fantastic efforts of the rescue teams and police needs recognition, and is a positive story from what is a terrible tragedy. The United States Geological survey came up with some different stats on the quake and that is mostly what is being quoted in the media. The attitude seems to be that they are only Chinese and their media cannot be trusted to report accurately. In truth often it is the other way around.
