Man kills 12 in Rio school shooting in Brazil

Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira school - this is as close as anyone is getting for now.

A 23 year old former pupil has opened fire at a school in Rio de Janeiro killing 11 people and dying himself. At least another 10 people are injured.

It is unclear at this stage if the gunman has taken his own life or been shot by police.

The Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira school is for 9-14 year olds in the western Realengo area of Rio, which is an impoverished neighbourhood.

The gunman, identified as Wellington Menezes Oliveira – entered the school at about 0800 local time and told school officials he was there to make a speech.

He reportedly had two revolvers and a lot of ammunition. He opened fire with witnesses saying he was aiming at victims’ heads. Ten girls and a boy were reportedly killed.

Dorival Porto Rafael, a rubbish collector who was at the school at the time, said the gunman “came into the class” where children were studying Portuguese “saying he was going to give a talk. Without saying anything [he] took out a pistol from his bag and started firing.

“The police arrived and he tried to go up to the next floor, but when he saw he was surrounded he shot himself in the head,” Rafael said.

Police said the gunman had a letter, stating that he intended to commit suicide after the shooting.

Newswarped acknowledges that it is hard to separate emotionally disturbed people from guns, but the fact many of them feel the need to hurt children is unbelievably tragic.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
