Martelly wins Haiti presidential vote

Haiti president-elect Michel Martelly is looking positively presidential already. He has the Obama head tilt down to a tee.

Preliminary results in Haiti’s presidential election show that musician Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly has won the runoff vote against former first lady Mirlande Manigat.

The 20th March runoff vote had a high voter turnout and was largely peaceful.

There were major concerns over the electoral process after only 23 percent of voters turned out for the first presidential ballot in November 2010.

The final ‘official’ results for the election are not due out until mid-April.

Martelly faces a huge task to bring Haiti together and overcome the significant problems still being experienced following the January 2010 earthquake and subsequent cholera epidemic.
