Rio rocks the box office

Cute and colourful. A standard formula but it seems to keep working.

Twentieth Century Fox’s 3D animated film “Rio” rocked into top spot with an excellent opening weekend. The US domestic box office take was an estimated $40 million from 3,826 locations, making it the best opening in the US so far in 2011.

Rio came out top around the world too, with a $94 million take worldwide over the weekend. The total receipts so far come to a fantastic of $169 million after just 12 days in release around the world.

Helping Rio’s box office was an underperforming Scream 4, which only managed $19.3 million in the US from 3505 screens.
