Schapelle Corby release imminent

The bars could be a thing of the past if Indonesia's President decides to release her.

Iskandar Nawing the lawyer for convicted drug smuggler, Schapelle Corby says Corby could be released immediately if President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono accepts the Indonesian Supreme Courts recommendation that her sentence is cut in half.

Nawing says “If the president signs off on it, with the time Corby has served already she will be eligible for parole. I will immediately make the arrangement based on the clemency.”

The recommendation was handed to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono last July and he has taken his time to reach a decision. He wouldn’t be the kind of bloke you send into the DVD store to pick a quick rental for everyone to watch.

Schapelle Corby was arrested six and a half years ago after more than four kilo’s of marijuana was found in her bodyboard bag at Bali airport.

She has lost a succession of legal appeals, and a clemency request to Indonesia’s president is her last chance of getting out early.

At the moment we only have Nawing’s word for it that a decision is imminent. Neither the Supreme Court nor Dr Yudhoyono’s state secretariat are commenting about when the ruling is coming out.

The Corby camo will be hoping that their lawyer has got his ear to the ground on this one.
