Air France Flight 447 cockpit voice recorder found

To find this in the Atlantic Ocean, 3000m down is an amazing effort.

Searchers have found the cockpit voice recorder from Air France flight 447 that crashed in off the coast of Brazil in 2009, killing all 228 people on board.

The discovery of the voice recorder comes only a day after the recovery of the flight data recorder.

Air France chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon called it “another decisive step forward in the inquiry” into the cause of the crash, which remains unknown nearly two years after it happened.

It is still unclear if the information contained on the recorders is still readable. 23 months on the ocean floor at a depth of around 3000m will be a significant test of the recorders durability.

The Airbus A330 dropped out of the sky in a rapid vertical descent that cannot be explained to date. There were high level thunder storms in the region at the time, but other flights passed safely through the area.
