John Paul II beatified: one million attend vatican event

How many Catholics does it take to fill St Peters Square? We don't know but quite a few by the look of it.

The late Pope, John Paul II, has been officially beatified by Pope Benedict XVI at a ceremony at the Vatican in front of hundreds of thousands of Catholic pilgrims in St Peter’s Square.

Beatifiation is he last stage before sainthood, in the Roman Catholic Church.

John Paul II died only six years ago, and his rapid path to sainthood has drawn criticism from some who think it is being done to provide the Roman Catholic Church with a ‘good news’ story following years of damaging sexual abuse scandals.

The Italian police estimate there are up to one million people in Rome for the beatification event. Including thousands who have flocked in from the former Pope’s native Poland.
