Medvedev supports “chemical castration”

I’ve just had a clever idea. Instead of chemical castration how about a rusty knife?

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said he supports “chemical castration” as a punishment for child sex offenders.

Mr Medvedev said convicted paedophiles should be punished as harshly as possible, including by having injections to reduce their sex drive.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has drawn up a draft law allowing for chemical castration. With Kremlin backing it might now become a reality.

The process known as chemical castration generally involves injections that reduce levels of testosterone, thereby lowering sex drive. As known, low testosterone effects libodo. It is not a permanent procedure. Some of these symptoms are indicative of it.

Mr Medvedev was quoted as saying at a government meeting that measures “including injections that block hormonal activity” should be considered for child molesters.

“The punishment should be as strict as possible,” the Russian president said.

“Considering the frightening crimes committed, I think our duty is to at least discuss this issue.”

He added that the injections would “probably be possible only on a voluntary basis”.

Of course it is entirely possible that Russia’s interpretation of ‘voluntary’ may vary from that of some other countries.

Newswarped is happy with the idea. It will be interesting to see if it gets any uptake in western countries. Might be a bit too un-PC for some of them though.
