A White House official declined to divulge the subject matter of the statement, but the decision to address the nation at such short notice and on a Sunday evening was highly unusual.

Reports are that Osama Bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan and not in the border regions of Afghanistan.

He was killed in a US military operation against a mansion in the outskirts of the Pakistan capital Islamabad. Sources say the attack was a ground operation and not a pilotless drone.

Pakistani intelligence officers were also involved in the highly secret operation.

Vice-President Joe Biden has confirmed to senior Republicans that Bin Laden is dead.

Crowds are gathering outside the White House and Chanting “USA, USA” and singing the Star Spangled Banner.

President Obama praises the Pakistan intelligence help in locating Bin Laden.

Obama says Bon Laden is not a Muslim leader but a mass murderer who killed muslims as well as US citizens and people from other countries.
