Reports Taliban leader Mullah Omar dead

Mullah Omar has turned looking serious into an art form. He is also the unofficial world one eyed staring champion.

Mullah Omar the spiritual leader of the Taliban has been killed in Pakistan according to Afghan and Iranian media.

The Afghan news channel TOLO Television said Omar had been killed as he travelled in Balochistan in Pakistan’s border region with Afghanistan.

“Mullah Omar was killed on the way from Quetta to North Waziristan,” TOLO reported.

The TOLO claims have been quickly rejected by spokepeople for the Taliban in Afghanistan.

“This is pure propaganda. This is not possible at all,” one spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

What would be really useful in this situation is if Mullah Omar himself were to deny he was dead.

An Iranian news report however said a post-mortem examination was being conducted. Several reports said Omar had been missing for 11 days.

Mullah Omar, 52, was the head of the Taliban regime that ruled Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001. He was said to have close links to Osama Bin Laden. Afghanistan’s sheltering of Bin Laden was used a pretext for the US invasion in 2001.
