Strauss-Kahn resigns as head of the IMF

See now I am free to run for the French Presidency. Does anyone have a pair of bolt cutters?

Dominique Strauss-Kahn has resigned as managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) but maintains that he is innocent of the sexual assault charges made against him.

Strauss-Kahn said in a statement “It is with infinite sadness that I feel compelled today to present to the Executive Board my resignation from my post of Managing Director of the IMF.”

“I want to say that I deny with the greatest possible firmness all of the allegations that have been made against me,” the statement added.

Strauss-Kahn, a leading French politician, who is widely expected to challenge Nicolas Sarkozy in the French Presidential elections, is currently in jail in New York awaiting a grand jury decision on whether to indict him on charges of the alleged sexual assault and attempted rape of a 32-year-old Manhattan hotel chambermaid.

US investigators are obviously confident in their case. They have been steadily gathering evidence and today were searching for relevent DNA in the hotel room in questions carpet. Investigators ended up cutting out a piece of carpet in the penthouse suite.

New York detectives and prosecutors believe the carpet in the hotel room may contain Strauss-Kahn’s semen, spat out after an episode of forced oral sex.

Strauss-Kahn, jailed at Rikers Island since Monday, made a second appeal for bail today and proposed to be confined to his daughter’s Manhattan home 24 hours a day with electronic monitoring. He was set for another hearing Thursday afternoon.

The French politician said in court papers that he had surrendered his passport and wouldn’t flee the country. “I do not intend to leave the United States of America without the permission of the New York Court,” he said.

Besides examining the Sofitel Hotel suite for further potential DNA evidence, investigators were looking at the maid’s keycard to determine whether she used it to enter the room, and how long she was there, officials said.

One of the officials said that the DNA testing was being “fast-tracked” but that the results could still be a few days away.

The maid, a 32-year-old immigrant from the West African nation of Guinea, told police that the 62-year-old Strauss-Kahn came out of the bathroom naked, chased her down, forced her to perform oral sex on him and tried to remove her underwear before she broke free and fled the room.
