A class trip to Morley Piers, Mariners Landing Pier last Friday has ended in tragedy when an 11-year-old girl died after falling from a Ferris wheel at the New Jersey amusement park.

Abiah Jones fell from ‘The Great Wheel’ at around 12:30 p.m. First responders gave her first aid and took her to Cape Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead about 1:15 p.m., according to the Wildwood Police Department.

The 156ft Great Wheel is one of the tallest Ferris wheels on the US East Coast.

The cause of the girl’s fall was unknown and the Wildwood police and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office continue to investigate.

The Carnival Amusement Inspectors of New Jersey are also conducting their own investigation.

The park opened in 1985 and there have been no previous fatalities. The safety certificates on the ride were all up to date.
