Gunmen and suicide bombers attack top Kabul hotel

The entrance of the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul. The Taliban are now offering room service here featuring their usual menu of atrocities.

The Intercontinental Hotel in Afghanistan’s capital city Kabul has come under attack from gunmen and suicide bombers.

The police report that seven gunmen got inside the hotel and a firefight was ongoing. All the attackers have been killed along with two security personnel and nine others – probably civilians.

A security official said three suicide bombers had blown themselves up – at the hotel’s front gate, on the second floor, and at the back of the hotel.

The Intercontinental is one of Kabul’s best-known hotels and is popular with Westerners visiting Afghanistan.

In a shock announcement the Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. Surely, suicide bombings, shootings and murdering innocent civilians are not the hallmarks of a deeply religious organisation?
