Injury forces Kim Clijsters out of Wimbledon

This years Wimbledon could have done with Kim Clijsters and the large dose of charisma she would have brought.

Belguim tennis star Kim Clijsters has been forced to pull out of Wimbledon today following a recurrence of an ankle injury.

The 28-year-old Belgian, who is the reigning US Open and Australian Open champion, has never even reached the final of the grass-court event and has missed out on her chance to put that right this year.

Clijsters was forced to admit defeat in the race to regain her fitness when scans showed the injury, initially picked up while dancing at a relative’s wedding, will need some rest to heal properly.

Caroline Wozniacki is the womans top seed for the tournament and Clijsters had been seeeded second.

Like the recent French Open, the Wimbledon womans title is there for the taking with no clear dominant player in the box seat to win it.

Last years beaten finalist Vera Zvonareva, has been promoted to second seed.

French Open winner Li Na is the third seed, with Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and former winner Maria Sharapova now fourth and fifth.

Even the return of Serena Williams has not set the womens draw alight. Any of the top ten are a realistic chance.
