Tiger Woods sacks caddy Steve Williams

Now when Tiger Woods throws his club away, Steve Williams will not be there to catch it.

Golf star Tiger Woods has dropped a bombshell by axing longtime caddy and friend Steve Williams. Williams broke the news first with an angry post on his website, followed by a more sedate statement from Tiger Woods about half an hour later.

Steve Williams says he is “shoched” at the news and will now caddy for Australian golfer Adam Scott.

Tiger Woods says he wants to go in a “new direction” with his game. He said in a statement, “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Stevie for all his help, but I think it’s time for a change.”

Is that it Tiger? After 12 major victories with Steve and 13 years together? The guy who stuck by you when your father was dying. The guy who stuck by you and kept his mouth shut when your affairs hit the headlines and your game halted by injury.

This is a bitter pill for Steve Williams who demonstrated loyalty and discretion. Not to mention being a first rate caddy.

Tiger has been working with a new coach an has a new swing, so has decided to clear the decks with a new un-named caddy who has yet to be appointed.

The full statement from Steve Williams is as follows:

“Following the completion of the AT&T National I am no longer caddying for Tiger after he informed me that he needed to make a change. After 13 years of loyal service needless to say this came as a shock. Given the circumstances of the past 18 months working through Tiger’s scandal, a new coach and with it a major swing change and Tiger battling through injuries I am very disappointed to end our very successful partnership at this time. I have had the opportunity to work of late for Australian Adam Scott and will now caddy for him on a permanent basis. Having started my caddying career with Australian great Peter Thompson and working for Greg Norman in the 80’s I am excited about the future working for another Australian.”
