Joran van der Sloot charged with murder

Joran van der Sloot looking ecstatic about being charged with murder in Peru.

Joran van der Sloot the prime suspect in the disappearance of Alabama teenager, Natalee Holloway has been arrested by Peruvian authorities have charged with murdering Stephany Flores in May 2010.

Stephany Flores was found dead in van der Sloot’s, Lima hotel room. Police say van der Sloot took money and bank cards from her wallet and fled to Chile, where he was arrested a few days later.

Now van der Sloot has been formally charged with murder. Prosecutors are asking for a 30-year prison sentence and a restitution of $73,000 to the family of Stephany Flores. They also charged van der Sloot with theft.

Charged alongside van der Sloot were three Peruvian drivers who allegedly helped him flee Peru into Chile. Prosecutors want five-year prison sentences for them and fines of about $1,800.

The Flores’ family put pressure on prosecutors to file their case against van der Sloot because under Peruvian law, if a suspect’s trial doesn’t begin within 18 months of his arrest, he is set free. That would have seen van der Sloot released in December.

Murder suspect – it is an odd career choice for van der Sloot. Not everyones idea of making a contribution to society.
